About of Rain Chains

Rain chains also known as kusari doi after their Japanese name, originated in Japan and are alternatives to the downspout component in a traditional rain gutter system. Their purpose is both decorative and functional - to make a water feature from the transportation of rainwater cascading downwards into a drain or to a storage container. (Rainwater, collected for household usage has now been given the new name - Water Harvesting.) With the growing awareness regarding water scarcity people are relying on rain chains to collect and reuse rain water.

Rain chain are typically either a series of metal cups, linked together with a hole in the bottom of each, or chain links that span vertically. Most rain chains are made keeping in mind the basic premise of collecting rain water, so they have a wide mouth to capture rain which narrows down to a small opening to expel the rain water to the next cup. This minimizes spillage and splashing so most of the rain water travels down the length of the rain chain and can be collected for further re-use.

Rain chains work exactly like American downspouts, but in a way that evokes pleasure and delight. Over a period of time rain chains have been modified to suit current needs and trends. The simple cups have given way to more stylish cups connected together with equally stylish links.

There is a big movement to reduce the amount of plastic consumed and with the replacement of plastic downspouts with copper gutter downspouts you will notice the tangible benefits in a few years as awareness grows.

There is a huge need to advise people of the growing drought conditions in several states and the urgency to conserve water, and while the media is playing some part in this but it definitely needs to be given more attention. Copper gutter downspouts have the ability to transport the rain water from the top of the gutter to the ground and they do so in a beautiful aesthetic way which is very pleasing to the senses. Upon reaching the ground it can be stored in large tanks which some innovative people build underneath or surface storage barrels for further re-use. The urban gardener has also learnt to use this rain water in various ways.

Time is of the essence and we urge you to do all you can to conserve our natural resources and take the small steps to building a better environment.
